So close for Tommy

This weekend saw a thrilling finish in the Canadian Open. Home favourite Nick Taylor was in the clubhouse with the lead at -17 but Tommy Fleetwood still had 2 holes to play and was just 1 shot back. The finishing 2 holes are not as tricky as some courses so when Tommy made birdie on 17 it was expected he would take the title with the par 5 18th left to play. The hole measured just 499 yards, very short for a par 5 these days for the pros. Tommy just needed to solid shots to hit the middle of the green then he could have 2 putted his way to victory.

Sadly that was not how it played out for him. His tee shot found the rough and when trying to lay up out of the rough he found it again. His 3rd shot meant playing safe and then giving himself an outside chance of making birdie. He missed and a playoff followed. Both players made birdie on the first extra hole and followed it with 2 pars each. They returned back to 18 and Taylor knocked it on it 2. He was still 72ft away so a birdie was the likely outcome but as soon as he hit the putt you could just see it tracking towards the cup the whole way. As the ball dropped the mass celebrations started with other Canadian players joining their colleague on the green.

This is now Tommy's 5th 2nd place finish on the PGA Tour but a good sign ahead of this weeks US Open. There was also good finishes for Tyrell Hatton and Aaron Rai who finished on -16. It was another disappointing final round for defending champion Rory McIlroy who drifted out of contention.
