Eugenio Chacarra Wins 2026 DP World India Championship and Takes Control of the Race to Dubai

Eugenio Chacarra has taken another huge step in his remarkable rise through European golf, winning the 2026 DP World India Championship and, perhaps even more importantly, moving to the top of the Race to Dubai standings.

The Spaniard completed a marathon final day at Delhi Golf Club to finish 21 under par, two shots ahead of New Zealand's Daniel Hillier, securing his third DP World Tour victory of the 2026 season and his fourth career title on the circuit.

But the trophy in New Delhi could prove to be worth considerably more than another tournament victory.

With just three events remaining in the DP World Tour season, Chacarra has overtaken long-time leader Patrick Reed and moved ahead of Rory McIlroy in what is developing into a fascinating battle for the Harry Vardon Trophy.

Chacarra Masters a Difficult Week in Delhi

The 2026 DP World India Championship was far from straightforward.

Storms and weather delays disrupted the opening days at Delhi Golf Club, leaving the tournament well behind schedule and forcing several players to complete large numbers of holes in a short period.

Few handled those circumstances better than Chacarra.

Rounds of 67 and 67 put him at ten under and into the halfway lead before he took complete control of the tournament with a brilliant third-round 63.

Because of the earlier delays, Chacarra had to return early on Sunday morning to complete the final seven holes of that third round. By the time he signed his card, he had built a five-shot advantage going into the final 18 holes.

That meant Sunday's schedule became a serious test of both physical and mental endurance.

Chacarra ultimately completed 25 holes on the final day.

A Six-Shot Lead – But Hillier Wouldn't Go Away

With such a big advantage, it initially appeared the final round might become a procession.

Chacarra immediately made birdie at the first before holing a 17-foot birdie putt at the third. His advantage had suddenly increased to six shots.

But winning tournaments is rarely that simple.

A bogey at the sixth provided the chasing pack with some encouragement, while the pressure began to increase as Chacarra reached the back nine.

His short game proved crucial.

Excellent par saves at the ninth and tenth prevented his lead from shrinking further before another 17-foot putt at the 11th produced an important birdie.

Meanwhile, Daniel Hillier was charging.

The New Zealander produced a superb back-nine run and birdied the 18th to finish at 19 under, reducing a lead which had once been six shots to just two.

Suddenly Chacarra had very little room for error.

A Crucial Recovery at the 16th

The defining moment may have arrived at the 16th.

After finding trouble from the tee, Chacarra was facing the possibility of dropping a shot at precisely the moment Hillier was applying maximum pressure.

Instead, the Spaniard produced an outstanding recovery and saved par.

Pars at the 17th and 18th followed, allowing Chacarra to complete a final-round 70 and finish on 21-under-par 267.

Hillier's late charge had made him work for it, but the two-shot victory belonged to Chacarra.

It was not necessarily Chacarra's most spectacular round of the season, but it may have been one of his most important.

As he said afterwards, his short game, patience and ability to grind through a tiring final day proved critical.

Three Wins in a Remarkable 2026 Season

Chacarra's victory in India continued an outstanding campaign.

He had already won the KLM Open and Italian Open in June, meaning the victory in New Delhi gives him three DP World Tour titles during 2026.

His overall tally now stands at four after he claimed his first DP World Tour title at the 2025 Hero Indian Open, also in India.

His record in India is therefore becoming quite extraordinary.

But even more impressive has been his late-season consistency.

Before arriving in New Delhi, Chacarra had finished third at the FedEx Open de France and then second at the Open de España, despite playing with a fractured toe.

Victory in India means his recent form now reads third, second and first.

And that run has completely transformed the Race to Dubai.

Chacarra Takes the Race to Dubai Lead

For much of 2026, Patrick Reed appeared to be the player everyone else had to catch.

The American had occupied the top of the standings since February following victories at the Dubai Desert Classic and Qatar Masters.

But Chacarra has gradually closed the gap.

His victory in India finally took him past Reed and into first place.

The Race to Dubai standings following the DP World India Championship are:

Position

Player

Race to Dubai points

1

Eugenio Chacarra

4,092.89

2

Patrick Reed

3,474.62

3

Rory McIlroy

3,144.86

4

Casey Jarvis

2,695.51

5

Aaron Rai

2,467.00

Chacarra now leads Reed by 618.27 points, with McIlroy 948.03 points behind the Spaniard.

That is a significant advantage.

But it certainly isn't decisive.

The Biggest Points Are Still Available

The reason the Race to Dubai remains wide open is that enormous numbers of points remain available during the final weeks of the season.

The regular season concludes at the Genesis Championship in South Korea from October 22-25, where the winner receives 835 Race to Dubai points.

Attention then turns to the two DP World Tour Play-Off events.

The Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship from November 5-8 offers 1,500 points to the winner, before the season concludes at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai from November 12-15, where victory is worth a massive 2,000 points.

That means there are still huge swings possible.

Chacarra has the advantage, but Reed and McIlroy remain firmly in the title race.

Chacarra Has Another Opportunity in Korea

There is one potentially important advantage for Chacarra.

He is expected to compete at this week's Genesis Championship, while Reed and McIlroy are not scheduled to play again until the Play-Offs in Abu Dhabi.

That gives Chacarra an opportunity to increase his lead before the final two tournaments.

Another strong performance in South Korea could make the task facing Reed and McIlroy considerably harder.

Equally, a poor week from Chacarra would leave the door wide open going into Abu Dhabi.

With so many points available in the Play-Offs, nothing is settled.

McIlroy Endures a Difficult Week

For Rory McIlroy, India proved frustrating.

McIlroy began the week looking to close the gap at the top of the standings, but his challenge faded as the tournament progressed.

A final-round 74 left him tied for 42nd at four under par, meaning he slipped to third in the Race to Dubai.

However, writing off McIlroy would be extremely dangerous.

The Northern Irishman has an exceptional record in the Middle East and will play both Abu Dhabi and the DP World Tour Championship.

He is also chasing what would be an eighth Race to Dubai title.

With 3,500 points available to the winners of those final two tournaments combined, McIlroy remains very much involved.

Patrick Reed Loses the Lead

Reed's week was steadier but also costly.

He finished tied for 23rd at eight under, gaining some Race to Dubai points but nowhere near enough to prevent Chacarra racing past him.

The American had led the standings for most of the year, making Chacarra's rise particularly significant.

Reed now enters the Play-Offs as the hunter rather than the hunted.

From LIV Golf to Race to Dubai Leader

Chacarra's rise also adds another fascinating layer to the story.

The Spaniard previously competed on LIV Golf before turning his attention towards establishing himself on the DP World Tour.

Winning the 2025 Hero Indian Open earned him full DP World Tour status, and less than two years later he is now leading the season-long championship with just weeks remaining.

His progression has been rapid.

More importantly, he increasingly looks comfortable competing at the very top of European golf.

He is no longer simply trying to establish himself on the Tour.

He is trying to become its number one player.

Ryder Cup Ambitions Growing Too

There could also be another major reward waiting in 2027.

Chacarra has made no secret of his desire to represent Europe at the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.

After winning in Delhi, he said his goal was not simply to rely on a captain's pick from Luke Donald but to qualify automatically as one of Europe's six automatic selections.

Continue winning tournaments and that conversation will only become louder.

A Race to Dubai victory would certainly make a powerful statement.

Can Chacarra Follow Seve and Rahm?

For Spanish golf, the possibility of Chacarra becoming European number one carries particular significance.

He has spoken about his admiration for Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm, two Spaniards who have previously lifted the Harry Vardon Trophy.

Chacarra said after moving to the top that joining those names would "mean the world" to him.

He now has that opportunity.

Three tournaments remain.

Chacarra leads.

Patrick Reed is chasing.

Rory McIlroy is waiting for two tournaments in a region where he has repeatedly produced his best golf.

And thousands of Race to Dubai points remain available.

The Race to Dubai Has Come Alive

The 2026 DP World India Championship may ultimately be remembered as far more than another victory for Eugenio Chacarra.

It could prove to be the week when the entire Race to Dubai changed.

Chacarra arrived in Delhi chasing Patrick Reed.

He leaves with the trophy, three victories for the season and the number one position in the season-long standings.

His brilliant 63 gave him control of the tournament. His short game kept him there when the pressure increased. And his closing 70 completed one of the most important wins of his career.

Now comes an even bigger challenge.

Eugenio Chacarra is leading the 2026 Race to Dubai – and with Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy chasing him, the final month of the DP World Tour season promises to be fascinating.
